The Virginia Beach Police Department's deputy chief will retire from his position on July 1.

Deputy Chief Tony Zucaro submitted a letter to Virginia Beach Police Chief Jim Cervera on March 2 announcing his intention to retire. The department made Zucaro's letter available to the public via Facebook.

Zucaro has served in the VBPD since April 1979.

"I have truly enjoyed my journey as a member of the Virginia Beach Police Department and am excited to start a new path in my retirement," Zucaro wrote. "Thank you for the numerous opportunities for professional and personal development that have been provided [to] me. It has been a pleasure serving the community for over 4 decades, and I was honored to help achieve many of our collective goals along the way."

Zucaro also thanked the citizens of Virginia Beach "for their steadfast support for our collective public safety efforts" and said that it "has been an honor and privilege" to serve in the department.
