CHESAPEAKE, Va. - An estimated 600 people packed Chesapeake City Park on Saturday for the 2023 Walk to End Alzheimer's.
The event had been rescheduled from September when it was postponed due to a tropical storm.
The walk was emceed by News 3 anchor Jen Lewis and featured speeches from a number of lawmakers including Rep. Bobby Scott (D-Norfolk), Rep. Jen Kiggans (R-Virginia Beach) and Del. Cliff Hayes (D).
Alzheimer's Association's Southeastern Virginia chapter hosted and announced prior to the walk that they'd raised 92 percent of a $295,000 goal.
Attendees held different color flowers to show if they had Alzheimer's, were a caretaker or lost someone to the disease, which is neurogenerative and progressively worsens.
There is currently no cure.

“We advocate for folks no matter how they’re impacted by this disease. Today, they are really here with one another, celebrating with one another that this is a family," said Katie McDonough, Executive Director of the Alzheimer's Association of Southeastern Virginia.
The association says its fundraising campaign runs through the end of the year.
