NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A local program is bringing free books on bikes to children in the Newport News community.

Tuesday evening, Books on Bikes is meeting at Stoney Run Elementary to begin passing out books to children as summer reading officially kicks off.

Books on Bikes is a community outreach and literacy program that brings free books to children in Newport News. Those passing out books are all teachers that collect and buy books during the school year. They tell us they then ride in the summer with books and Popsicles to give out to the kids who are out in the neighborhoods surrounding their schools.

Notices are posted on social media and the teachers keep in touch with families to let them know when they pass out books. The program tells News 3 that the teachers read with kids that are out at the stops.

Books will be delivered to the following locations on Tuesday:

  • Beechmont Boys & Girls Club, 361 Beechmont Drive, 5 p.m.
  • Waypoint, 870 Lucas Creek Road, 5:30 p.m.
  • Autumn Lakes, 360 Roseman Court, 6 p.m.
  • Patriots Crossing pool/playground, 432 Manor Road, 6:30 p.m.
  • Paul's Park 7 p.m.
