RICHMOND, Va. - The month of September has more significance in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and professional golfer Marc Leishman and his wife can take credit for it.

Thursday, Governor Ralph Northam announced official observance of September 2020 as Sepsis Awareness Month. Through their charity, the Begin Again Foundation, Marc and Audrey Leishman had campaigned for Virginia to proclaim September as Sepsis Awareness Month and join the several states which recognize the need for awareness and improved treatment protocols for sepsis in order to save lives and create better outcomes for survivors.

In 2015, Toxic Shock Syndrome coupled with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome and sepsis had Audrey in a coma in ICU with a five percent chance to survive. Inspired by Audrey’s near-death experience, the Leishmans founded the Begin Again Foundation to bring life’s most pressing needs to families experiencing medical and life crises.
