NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Starting as early as Friday night at 9 p.m., drivers won’t be able to access the southbound lanes of I-664 at the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel.
This will be the first of a two weekend closure.
Construction crews will have the sounthbound lanes blocked off at the 26th Street off-ramp in Newport News, and will not have it reopened until early Monday morning, around 5 a.m.
VDOT has noted the reason for the project as repaving operations along the bridge-tunnel system. This weekend's closure is for southbound lanes only, however, there will be 1 northbound lane closed. The northbound closure and roadwork is scheduled for the weekend of October 9.
VDOT also advised the construction/closures will happen weather permitting. The best alternates for southbound Monitor Merrimac during the closure are the James River Bridge or eastbound HRBT.
However, plan ahead with extra time as there may be congestion with other motorists detouring as well.
