Woman narrowly escapes car before it gets hit by train in Southampton County

SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. - A woman was able to narrowly escape her vehicle after it became disabled on train tracks as a train was incoming.

State police were called to investigate a motor vehicle crash at approximately 8:56 p.m. where a car was struck by a CSX train. The incident occurred on July 6, 2022 on Shady Brook Trail, in Southampton County.

The driver of a 2012 Kia, Jackie La-Tia Cooke, became disabled on the train tracks. As the train approached, Cooke was able to exit the vehicle before it was struck by the CSX train. There were no injuries to Cooke, and minor damage to the train.

Cooke was the only person in the car around the time of the crash.
