Family in Norfolk cold case murder speaks out

Posted

For Steven Baldwin, Mount Trashmore in Virginia, Beach holds treasure troves of memories of his father Lionel Baldwin.

"He would drive us up here and just let us run around," said Baldwin.  "No matter how many years it's been, he crosses my mind."

The Baldwin family's happiness hit a heartbreaking end on August 27, 1975, when Lionel Baldwin, a Norfolk sailor, was stabbed to death in the Ocean View section of Norfolk while working his part time job as a cab driver.

Steven was nine years old.

"I just had to learn to accept the idea I didn't have a father," said Baldwin.

Last month, Norfolk police revealed they found the man they believe is responsible for Lionel Baldwin's murder.  Joel Joaqin Saenz was charged for stabbing the father of two to death all those years ago.  Cold case detectives re-opened the case in 2010.  New clues, credible witnesses and old evidence led them to Saenz.  California police arrested him on charges in that state and will send Saenz to Norfolk soon.

"The first thing I felt was surprised," said Baldwin.  "If it's the right guy, then he should be punished."
