NewsChannel 3's Jessica Larche saw John Ragin, the man accused of killing his three stepchildren and wife, smiling during the first day of trial. He also wiped tears from his face today as the jurors looked at dozens of autopsy pictures.

The 38-year-old is charged with capital murder in the deaths of his wife and three children in August 2011.

Investigators say he then fled to South Carolina with the young son he and Crystal shared.

The medical examiner testified that each of the victims was stabbed more than a dozen times.

She said six-year-old Rashid, weighing just 42 pounds, received the most stab wounds at 27.

Each of their bodies was covered in gasoline. But the medical examiner said only Sierra's body was burned so much so that her skin was charred and her body curled into a fetal position.

The medical examiner said they died from the stab wounds - not the fire - and were likely dead by the time the flames started.

The medical examiner also said some of the victims had defensive stab wounds meaning they may have tried to fight off their attacker.

Efforts that failed leaving nearly an entire family dead and a husband charged with their gruesome deaths.
