Suffolk, Va. - At Saint Phillips Pentecostal Church in Suffolk, one of their special members was surprised.

At the church's Wednesday night Bible Study, NewsChannel 3 was allowed to briefly interrupt to call down our guest of honor, Margaret Colander.

Gloria Diggs nominated her for a People Taking Action Award.  In her email, she described her as amazing, energetic, encouraged and helpful.

“I look to her as my adopted mom. Times when life seemed tough, she encouraged my heart so much to trust in The Lord and to just keep on keeping on.  She is just a joy to be around,” said an emotional Diggs.

Sister Margaret is known to run errands for her neighbors; she takes them grocery shopping, to medical appointments. She has her meals on wheels program for her neighbors. She also regularly visits nursing homes. At 89 years old, she shows no sign of slowing down.

We presented her with a People Taking Action Award.

It really had Sister Margaret at a loss for words.

“My motto is if I can help somebody along the way, my living will not be in vain.  So I thank you all so much and this is a pleasure and a surprise,” says Margaret.

Our community partner Southern Bank also gave her a $100 Visa gift card.

So where does Sister Margaret get her energy?

“There`s a doctor upstairs. There`s a savior upstairs. All I have to do is ask him and he blesses me,” she says.
