People Taking Action: NewsChannel 3 surprises special Hampton volunteer

Posted

Hampton, Va. - We had a special surprise for one special volunteer at the Downtown Hampton Child Development Center.

Her name is Mildred Gray, better known as "Grandma Gray."  When we surprised her, we told it was because of an email from Chere Flowers, the pre-school's development manager.

"I`ve worked with a lot of volunteers over my career, but 'Grandma Gray' is one of those people whose outstanding qualities make her indispensable," the letter read.

She's been a volunteer for six years and due to the 97-year-old's dedication,  we presented her with a People Taking Action award along with a $300 Visa gift card.

"Oh thank you so much. Ya'll gonna make me cry. Oh that is so nice. Thank ya'll so much," said Gray.

She really loves helping out Monday through Friday and she drives there herself.

"I just enjoy being here. I enjoy the teachers. The teachers are precious, but I love children."

She says it helps her stay young and she has no plans of slowing down any time soon.

"Well, I just love doing it and I love children. I love people, I love the teachers. I love everybody. God is just-- when He made me, He made me to love everybody."
