Newport News, Va. - At Family Light Baptist Church in Newport News we surprised a special 90-year-old member at the church.
In fact, an unscheduled choir rehearsal was set up just so we could make a People Taking Action presentation for Noretha Mills. It was her son, Donnette Mills who is the church pastor who sent us an email about how she takes action.
"She is a widow and has continued to support the family and friends in so many ways."
Now at 90 years old, she is still driving. We're told she'll drive people to their doctor's appointments, she'll make grocery runs for folks, and yes it is common for her to bring people with her to church.
In addition to taking action in the community, she heads up the church's senior choir.
So for those reasons, we presented Noretha Mills with a People Taking Action award along with a $300 Visa gift card from our community partner Southern Bank.
She was very thankful and explains why it's important for her to take action.
"Oh I do all the things I do because in the name of Jesus. I promised God I would go all the way. The most thing I think about, that I can aid people when they need me. That's why I tell them to call on me when they need me. You know and my phone is right by my bed. It doesn't matter what time it is, the daytime, nighttime, I'll get up and go," says Mills.
