NORFOLK, Va. - Kevin "poncho" McGhee is a hero to many kids in the Norfolk community. For 18 years, he has held a basketball camp for school-aged kids at the Rosemont Recreational Center off Chesapeake Blvd. And this year is no different.

This community leader not only teaches kids how to be the best athletes, he teaches them how to be the best people. He offers the camp free for those who want to work hard, be good community citizens and do well in school. In fact most of his participants are honor roll students.

One of the parents of the kids who participate in the camp every year, wrote us a letter nominating Coach McGhee for a People Taking Action Award.  Serena Tompkins tell us the coach is more than just a coach. He teaches kids how to be good students and how to give back to their community.  "Our coach needs an award for all his hard work and dedication and mentoring is superb!"

The players adore him and seem to appreciate what the coach does for them. "He works hard to make us get better. He believes in what he stands for," says one player.

So we arranged to be at the practice to surprise coach McGhee with a People Taking Action Award and a $300 gift card from our partner Southern Bank.   He was truly shocked to see us there and is going to use the money to pay for the players to travel to a basketball tournament next week.

Way to go Coach McGhee!
