The Torch Run for Special Olympics Virginia is moving through Hampton Roads this week, en route to the University of Richmond for the organization's Summer Games.

The run is also a fundraiser for Special Olympics, which provides year-round competition for athletes who have special needs.

Wednesday, the Virginia Beach Police Department and Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office ran the Flame of Hope through the Resort City to Norfolk, where they handed it off to Norfolk police, sheriff's deputies and ODU police.

"Those athletes when they see a law enforcement officer, it doesn't matter if they ever met them before, they run up, give them a giant hug. If you're having a bad day, your day gets turned around very quickly when they give you that big hug," a deputy told News 3.

Thursday morning, the Chesapeake Sheriff's Office and police will run the torch from Chesapeake City Park to City Hall.

So far, the Chesapeake Sheriff's Office has raised more than $15,000, more money than any department in the state. Lt. Col. Chris Pascal has also raised more than any other individual.

The Special Olympics Virginia Summer Games run Saturday and Sunday, June 9-10.
