CHESAPEAKE — Lisa Phillips is retiring after 47 years as a teacher — 43 of them at Deep Creek Elementary School in Chesapeake — and her students, colleagues, and family made sure she knew exactly what she means to them.
Dozens of former and current students lined the Deep Creek Middle School football field on June 9 to celebrate Phillips and her decades-long career. News 3 anchor Jessica Larche also joined the celebration to surprise Phillips with an Everyday Hero award.
Stephen Casper, a former student, came to the celebration with a photo from his childhood.
"This is when I was a kid. 20 years ago," said Casper. "This is my favorite teacher."
Fellow former student Elizabeth LeGrand reflected on the impact Phillips had on her life.
"I wouldn't be here today without her. So she's my favorite teacher and always will be," Legrand said.
All of Phillips' students are alumni of what they lovingly call PSU — Phillips State University. The chant was on full display at the celebration.
"Who are we?" Phillips called out.
"PSU!" the crowd responded.
"Who are we?" she asked again.
"PSU!"
"We're number one and not number —"
"Two!" the crowd finished.
Phillips said the outpouring of support left her speechless.
"It's overwhelming, and I'm just thankful," Phillips said.
"Right here, all of these people are my mentors, kids, parents. I couldn't have done it without them," Phillips said.
Teacher Chelsea Nash, who nominated Phillips for the recognition, described the kind of educator she is.
"Lisa changes lives. She doesn't just teach. She doesn't just follow the curriculum; she changes lives," Nash said.
Principal Leigha Canterbury spoke to the legacy Phillips leaves behind.
"This lady is a phenomenal educator in every sense of the word, and I could not be more proud of her," Canterbury said.
Phillips' husband and son were also on hand to celebrate her career. Her son, Ricardo Phillips, summed up what his mother means to him.
"She's always been a hero. She's always been a hero. She's always been mine," he said.
One student offered a simple but powerful farewell.
"You've really changed my life. I love you," the student said.
"I love you too," Phillips replied.
Southern Bank, marking its 125th anniversary, honored Phillips with a $425 gift card — $300, the standard award for Everyday Heroes, plus an additional $125 to commemorate the milestone.
