NORFOLK, Va — A Norfolk woman who has spent nearly three decades quietly serving her community is being recognized as an Everyday Hero.

Rebecca Butts volunteers at the New Hope Christian Community Center in Norfolk, where she has dedicated 29 years to helping others. She staffs a clothing closet where people can pick up donated clothes, helps individuals sign up for benefits and other assistance, and gives books to children. Sometimes, her gift comes in the form of a concert.

Butts rarely stops working. When she is not cleaning or cooking in the kitchen, she is feeding souls.

"29 years of this, you can be anywhere in the world doing whatever you want right now and you choose. Why?," asked News 3 anchor Blaine Stewart. "Because I'm happy, I'm giving back to individuals that need help and they know if they come. I'm right here for them," Butts said.

Those who work alongside her say her dedication is unmatched.

"Every day she's here. Sometimes need to run her out of here, but she's here, uh, so that when it's cold and it gets cold, and then she stays a little. So that uh certain individuals would not have to grade the cold or the hot temperature," a colleague said.

Thanks to community partners at Southern Bank, Butts received a $425 Visa gift card in recognition of her service.
