VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Earlier this year, Grace Wildey went on her dream vacation to Covington, Georgia — the town where the TV series The Vampire Diaries was filmed, known to fans as Mystic Falls.
“We got special treatment at the Mystic Grill, which is like the one in the show. We also met some of the characters, which was really fun,” Grace’s mother Kim Wildey said.
The person who helped make the trip unforgettable is Toby’s Dream volunteer Vicki Blett.
“She loves the kids. She interviews the kids and she does fabulous send-off parties for them. She’s just a jewel,” said Toby's Dream founder Joan Steele.
Toby’s Dream is a nonprofit that grants wishes to children battling cancer and depends on volunteers like Blett to make the magic happen.
We waited anxiously at the nonprofit’s headquarters in Town Center for Vicki to arrive.
“I’m Beverly with News 3,” I said. “I thought you were going to volunteer with us.”
“Well, that may be true too, but we are actually here to give you an Every Day Hero award,” Vicki responded.
“That is amazing! Thank you so much!” Blett said.
We also presented Blett with $425 from community partner Southern Bank. The amount included an extra $125 to mark the bank’s 125th anniversary this year.
“She just puts so much time into everybody she helps,” Grace said. “When she first came to my house when I started my journey, she was so kind and she made me feel safe.”
