SUFFOLK, Va. — What started as a small effort to feed her neighbors in need has grown into a mission that has helped feed thousands of families across the region.

Sentara Obici Hospital nurse Mary Perdue is the latest recipient of News 3's Everyday Hero award, recognized for her work leading the Full Plate Project, a nonprofit effort focused on fighting food insecurity.

Perdue was surprised with the honor at Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk, where coworkers, volunteers and supporters gathered to celebrate her impact on the community.

"It's nice to know that they do support, but I already knew they did," Perdue said through tears after receiving the award. "They're awesome. It's an awesome group, and I appreciate every one of them."

According to Perdue, the Full Plate Project has provided more than 150,000 meals this year alone to neighbors in Suffolk, Isle of Wight County, Southampton County and communities in northeast North Carolina.

"This is way more than I ever planned on it being," Perdue said. "It was supposed to be some food in a pantry after a Thursday when you got off of work, and it's turned into a lot of meals for a lot of people in a lot of different areas and cities in two different states. I didn't plan on any of that. It's wonderful and it's overwhelming."

Volunteer Jason Fanny, who nominated Perdue for the recognition, said her commitment extends far beyond her full-time nursing job.

"She already works a full-time job as a nurse, and then I swear she probably works more with the Full Plate Project," Fanny said. "It helps out so many people, so many people that are hungry."

Hospital leaders say Perdue's dedication to serving others continues long after her shifts end.

"What a service she's providing not only here at work, but on her free time as well," one colleague said. "It's just amazing."

As part of the Everyday Hero recognition, Southern Bank presented Perdue with a $425 gift card. The additional amount was included as part of the bank's 125th anniversary celebration.

"It's awesome. Thank you very much," Perdue said.

Perdue said the success of the project belongs to the many volunteers and supporters who have helped expand its reach and ensure families have access to food when they need it most.
