VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — For many, the holiday season is full of family and warmth, but for those in assisted living facilities, it can sometimes be the loneliest time of the year. One local woman is changing that, one smile and one gift at a time.

Connie Williams was surprised on her doorstep Tuesday by friends, family, and her church choir with the WTKR News 3 Everyday Hero award for her work with "Adopt a Senior" at Autumn Care of Norfolk.

Her shocked reaction? "You a liar," Williams said over and over to the crowd gathered on her lawn.

"All I wanna do is be a blessing to somebody," Williams said. "That's the whole purpose of us being here is to change people's lives."

Williams is a frequent visitor to the residents at Autumn Care. Because she spends so much time at the facility, she gets to know the specific needs of all 115 patients—even those who are unable to express their wishes themselves.

Through $30 sponsorships from community members, Williams ensures every single resident is celebrated with love, laughter, and a personalized gift at a massive annual Christmas party. The holiday event features games, singing, and handmade cards crafted by a third-grade class from Cradock Elementary School.

The initiative has also expanded to receive support from the Norfolk State University Alumni Association, bringing in welcomed donations for the residents throughout the year.

Williams’ close friend, Cynthia, nominated her for the award and kept her motivated when the logistics of helping over a hundred seniors became daunting.

"She labors in love and she sees the beauty," Cynthia said. "Her heart is just open to serve."
Along with an official plaque, the award comes with a $425 Visa gift card from Southern Bank, which Williams plans to use to buy more treats for the seniors. She hopes her recognition inspires others to spread kindness in their own everyday routines.

"Just be kind. Kindness don't cost you anything," Williams said. "So you can be kind. You start there and it'll trickle on to the next thing."
