CHESAPEAKE, Va. — During a recent morning commute near Great Bridge High school, a crossing guard was hit by a car.

Police tell News 3 a car was exiting campus when the crossing guard began walking into the street and the two collided.

A quick-thinking witness threw her car into park and offered aide and assistance. Kim Stumbo is quick to tell you that she was one of a few people who offered to help.

“For me, it’s like, I can’t do nothing. I got to do something. I’m going to step in. My mother and grandfather were also police officers, and I work in the medical field. I just must help people,” said Stumbo.

The citizens who offered aide, dialed 911 and directed traffic around the accident.

The witnesses worked together to bring order to the chaos. “I took my hoodie off and put something under her head to get her stable,” said Stumbo.

First responders arrived and took over, but not before Stumbo stepped into the street to help direct traffic around the accident. Master Police Officer Leo Kosinski praised Kim’s quick thinking.

“It could have been a lot worst without Kim springing into action like that, directing traffic and helping her. We’re just really appreciative,” Kosinski said.

What separates Kim Stumbo from the others who offered aide is that she doesn’t have full use of her right arm, but it didn’t hold her back from making a difference.
