VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Students and their parents at New Castle Elementary School wait anxiously for their bus driver, Bianca Patterson, to take them home from school.
“No words can describe how amazing Miss B is and the safety we feel when we put our kids on the bus,” said Melanie Sprinkel, a parent.
“She cares about us and our safety, and she is also very kind and fun,” said Connor Greene, a student.
But this day is different because everyone here knows that Miss B, as they affectionately call her, is receiving an Everyday Hero award for going above and beyond just driving a bus.
“It was the weekend, and I forgot something that was very important to me, and she drove all the way to my house and brought it to me,” said Olivia Hensley.
And it’s not just the students she looks out for.
“I’m personally going through chemotherapy right now, and I had mentioned I wanted sourdough bread. Later that week, I had sourdough bread that she made for me,” said Jamie Greene, a parent.
They showed up with notes of appreciation for their unsuspecting bus driver.
“What did you make for her today? What is that? It says, ‘I love you. Thank you for taking us to school,’” said Malia Wilson, a student.
As soon as the kids see Miss B’s bus round the corner, the crowd goes wild!
The Navy veteran steps off Bus 116, clearly emotional at all the love and attention coming from the familiar little faces.
“I’m Beverly from News 3, and these delightful children love you so much they wanted you to have an Everyday Hero Award,” I say.
“I don’t know what to say. Thank you all so much. I love you,” she replies, tearing up as the kids cheer for her and hug her.
“This means the world to me. This is why I do this job. I love this. Thank you all so much,” she adds.
“Miss B, we have a community partner, Southern Bank, and Southern Bank would like to give you a $300 gift card,” I inform her.
“I am absolutely speechless. This is a first for me in my life,” she responds.
Miss B, Bianca Patterson, her thoughtful students, and New Castle Elementary School are shining examples of community spirit in Hampton Roads.
“I don’t think my arms are big enough, but come here. I love you guys!” she exclaims.
Miss B, her students, parents and staff at New Castle Elementary are positively Hampton Roads.
