Virginia reports 863 new coronavirus cases; Hampton Roads makes up 19.7% of daily case increase

The Virginia Department of Health released their daily updated numbers involving COVID-19 cases within the state.

According to their website, there are now 109,019 total cases, 105,289 of which are confirmed and 4,593 are probable. There are 2,427 total COVID-19 related deaths, with 2,310 being confirmed and 117 being probable.

The case numbers are up by 863, and deaths are up by 17 since Wednesday. Our viewing area saw 170 new cases, 24 hospitalizations and 9 deaths, with our cases making up 19.7% of Virginia's daily case increase.

A total of 1,418,335 COVID-19 PCR tests have now been given in Virginia. The percent of positive tests has dropped below 7% in Virginia this week. On Wednesday, the VDH reported the rate at 6.7% and as of Thursday, it sits at 6.5%.

If you're interested or need a COVID-19 test, the VDH has a website where you can find testing locations, even free and drive-thru testing opportunities, throughout Virginia. The Virginia Beach Department of Public Health will be hosting two free testing events on August 20 and 22.

The Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association also updated their numbers. As of Thursday, there are 893 people currently being hospitalized, confirmed with COVID-19. There are 373 people receiving inpatient hospital care whose test results are still pending. Combined, there are a total of 1,266 being hospitalized for coronavirus related illness. That's 23 more hospitalizations from Wednesday.

The total statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations that have been reported over time is now 8,998.

276 confirmed positive patients, and those whose test results are pending, are currently hospitalized in the ICU.

148 hospital patients, both confirmed for coronavirus, and those with test results pending, are currently on a ventilator. 607 ventilators are being used in hospitals out of the 3,081 in the state - that's 20% usage.

14,091 patients who have been hospitalized for coronavirus have been discharged.
