Virginia sees highest daily COVID-19 case increase since spike in May

The Virginia Department of Health released their daily updated numbers involving coronavirus cases within the state.

According to their website, there are now 82,364 total cases, 79,253 of which are confirmed and 3,111 are probable. There are 2,067 total coronavirus related deaths, with 1,964 being confirmed and 103 being probable.

The case numbers are up by 1,127, and deaths are up by 13 since Thursday. This is the highest case increase that Virginia has seen since a spike in late May. On May 26, Virginia reported 1,615 cases which is the highest recorded daily increase.

The Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association also updated their numbers. As of Friday, there are 799 people currently being hospitalized for coronavirus. There are 451 people currently receiving inpatient hospital care whose test results are pending. Combined, the VHHA is reporting 1,250 people currently hospitalized for coronavirus related illness. That's 32 additional hospitalizations from Thursday.

274 confirmed positive patients, and those whose test results are pending, are currently hospitalized in the ICU.

142 hospital patients, both confirmed for coronavirus, and those with test results pending, are currently on a ventilator. 635 ventilators are being used in hospitals out of the 3,077 in the state - that's 21% usage.

10,576 patients who have been hospitalized for coronavirus have been discharged.

  • Chesapeake 1,953 cases, 180 hospitalized, 24 deaths (+86 cases, +1 hospitalization from Thursday)
  • Accomack 1,059 cases, 76 hospitalized, 15 deaths (+0 cases from Thursday)
  • Northampton 292 cases, 45 hospitalized, 28 deaths (+3 cases, +1 hospitalization from Thursday)
  • Hampton 822 cases, 48 hospitalized, 4 deaths (+36 cases, +2 hospitalizations from Thursday)
  • Norfolk 2,582 cases, 155 hospitalized, 20 deaths (+93 cases, +3 hospitalizations from Thursday)
  • James City County 484 cases, 59 hospitalized, 16 deaths (+13 cases from Thursday)
  • Newport News 1,356 cases, 69 hospitalized, 14 deaths (+48 cases from Thursday)
  • Poquoson 32 cases, 2 hospitalized, 0 deaths (+2 cases from Thursday)
  • Williamsburg 100 cases, 12 hospitalized, 6 deaths (+1 case from Thursday)
  • York County 259 cases, 14 hospitalized, 3 deaths (+16 cases, +1 hospitalization from Thursday)
  • Portsmouth 1,165 cases, 107 hospitalized, 21 deaths (+50 cases from Thursday)
