PORTSMOUTH, Va. — A food services worker at Churchland High School died in a "tragic accident," as described in a message school leaders sent to families, that happened on campus before the start of the school day Wednesday.

Around 6 a.m., police say they responded to an "auto accident involving a pedestrian" in the 4300 block of Cedar Lane. There, police say they found Katuria Grant, 61, with serious injuries. She was taken to the hospital where she later died.

Details on how the incident happened are not available as of this writing, and police say their investigation is ongoing.

Prior to police identifying Grant, Churchland High School Principal Brandi Smedley sent families the following message addressing the emergency vehicles' presence on campus.

Good afternoon, CHS families –

I am writing you with a heavy heart. You may have seen this morning there were emergency vehicles at our school. I am sad to report that a member of our staff passed away following a tragic accident on campus before the start of the school day.

As police have not publicly identified this staff member, I am unable to share more specifics. That said, we know the unexpected loss of a familiar face and caring adult can be very upsetting. I wanted you to be aware of this loss so you could discuss it with your child, in a manner you deem appropriate. Please also know that grief counselors will be available at our school Thursday, and any child who needs support throughout the school day can visit our counseling office.

Should you have any specific questions or concerns, you are welcome to reach out to me directly by calling 757-686-2500.

I want to thank you for your continued support of our school, and I ask that you join me in keeping our staff member’s family and friends close to your hearts during this very difficult time.

Thank you,Ms. Smedley

School leaders later confirmed with News 3 that Grant was a food services worker at Churchland High.
