PORTSMOUTH, Va. — A shooting suspect is in custody after he barricaded himself inside his home on Washington Street Monday afternoon, according to Portsmouth police.

Cordero Taylor, 38, was taken into custody around 4:30 p.m., police say. He was taken to a local hospital for care and clearance before being sent to a local jail.

Taylor, a suspect in a recent shooting, barricaded himself inside his home in the 300 block of Washington Street after police tried to arrest him for a recent shooting, police explained. A SWAT team was at the scene because the incident escalated to a tactical situation.

After Taylor was arrested, News 3 saw the SWAT team walk away from Renaissance Condominiums.

Residents near Washington Street were evacuated as officers tried to arrest Taylor, police stated.

Police said the 300 block of Washington Street is open again, after they asked drivers to avoid the area and rerouted Portsmouth school buses.
