NAVAL STATION NORFOLK - Last year, ahead of Hurricane Dorian's arrival in Hampton Roads, 38 Navy ships left for a safer location.

It was the Port Operations Department's job to get them out of port and back in safely.

Now, with the 2020 Hurricane season just beginning, this naval unit is ready to move again at a moment's notice.

Year-round, Port Operations is responsible for port services for all U.S. Navy ships, amounting to 2,000 ship movements at Hampton Roads bases in 2019, according to the Navy. The unit also handles logistics for forces afloat from support activities.

In tropical storm situations, Port Ops will not only sortie ships out to sea, they will also get ships unable to get underway to secure and safe locations on base, while also clearing gear, disconnecting power and taking other safety measures.

Congratulations and thank you to News 3's June 2020 Navy Unit of the Month, the Port Operations Department!
