Newport News homicide suspect arrested in upstate New York

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A man wanted in connection with an April 17 homicide has been detained in upstate New York.

On Saturday, May 30, Marshals found 19-year-old Alton Kasine Powers of Newport News and took him into custody. Powers is currently being held in New York and is awaiting extradition back to Newport News.

Powers is one of three suspects to be identified in the shooting death of 23-year-old Stephen D. White. Newport News Police obtained an arrest warrant for Powers on May 5.

After hearing gunshots, officers first responded to the 600 block of 25th Street at 11:38 p.m. on April 17, where they found White suffering from at least one gunshot wound.

White was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said that three males fled the area just after the shooting, according to surveillance footage.

On May 13, Shkise Fazion Cappe of Hampton was arrested and charged with 1st Degree Murder and nine other charges.

Powers has been charged with 1st Degree Murder; Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, three counts of Shooting into an Occupied Dwelling; Reckless Handling of a Firearm; Discharge of a Firearm within 1000 feet of a School and Damage to Property.
