CHESAPEAKE, Va. - The coronavirus is affecting people's wallets in more ways than one.

Local plumbers are seeing an increase in calls to clear drains after people are flushing disinfectant wipes down the drain.

The COVID-19 pandemic has homeowners stocking up on disinfectant wipes and sanitary napkins because they are the most efficient option to clean surfaces and battle germs. Little do some folks know, that flushing them down the drain can cost you hundreds, even thousands in particularly serious cases.

Plumbers at Michael & Son say flushing the wipes can cause the drain to clog overtime. Some cases just call for a simple unclog but if there are enough wipes it can cause major backups in the sewer system.

Experts recommend only flushing toilet paper. If you have to use disinfectant wipes they say to throw them in the garbage.
