GLOUCESTER CO., Va. — Local first responders, law enforcement officials, and loved ones recently gathered to join me in surprising Kordelia Coyne, a 14-year-old from Gloucester, as she was honored with WTKR News 3's latest Everyday Hero award.

Kordelia's Lemonade Stand, which she started five years ago when she was just 9 years old, has raised funds to provide thank you cards and $10 gift cards for first responders across the nation.

Kordelia has successfully distributed over 6,000 gift cards, earning the admiration of local law enforcement, including Mathews County Sheriff April Edwards. She says Kordelia's kindness went a long way on a day when it was especially needed.

“What she doesn’t know is that day she caught me [to give me the cards], I was working a pretty major case," said Sheriff Edwards. "She hit me at the right day to say thank you, and that is something I’ll never forget."

Gloucester County Sheriff Darrell Warren also expressed his pride, saying, “You’ve been there for us for years, and that means so much to us.”

Earlier this month, those sheriffs, Kordelia's friends, family, local first responders and former Everyday Hero Award winner Amy Ashberry joined me at Kordelia's home to surprise her with the honor.

I said, "Are you surprised to see everyone here?”

Kordelia, the humble hero, replied, “a little!”

Tears welled in Kordelia's eyes when I presented her with the award, and a $300 gift card from our community partner Southern Bank.

“Some of it’s definitely going back into the lemonade stand,” she said, showcasing her dedication to her cause.

Kordelia's mission drew the attention and support of Mathews County teacher Amy Ashberry. I surprised her last summer for her mission that has sent thousands of packages to children across the globe. Ashberry nominated Kordelia for this recognition.

“She’s amazing!” Amy exclaimed when asked why she nominated Kordelia.

Kordelia’s parents are equally proud. Her mother stated, “At 14, she’s already made such an impact in this world that most people wouldn’t make in their entire life,” while her father added, “She’s an awesome kid. She’s got a heart of gold. She’s a mother hen. She’s always helping somebody.”
