VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — From Alaska and California out West to the Louisiana bayou and all the states in between, students at White Oaks Elementary in Virginia Beach learned about all 50 states.
When asked what he learned, student Eli Scott said, "That Kool‑Aid was made in Nebraska."
Students gave a tour of their latest project: K‑5 classes each picked a state and decorated their classroom doors with facts and highlights about that state. First‑grader Charlotte Halpert helped decorate her homeroom door, which featured New Mexico. "I learned about the state flower and all the different colleges," she said.
"After all the doors were done, we put together a scavenger hunt — one for older students and one for younger students — where they could find the answers on the doors," teacher Amber Crunk said. "We've had more than 300 scavenger hunts turned in, which is more than half our student body."
And for participating classes: extra recess!
The idea began as a way to highlight College and Career Month and evolved into a fun, interactive door‑decorating project. The creative staff and students at White Oaks Elementary are making learning fun and memorable — and they are "Positively Hampton Roads."
