NORFOLK, Va. — It’s big. It's weird. And it’s smelly. And believe or not, it’s a flower.
Visitors to the Norfolk Botanical Garden are anxiously awaiting a corpse flower called Lady Macdeath to bloom. This is the first time the garden has had a corpse flower. According to the garden, there are only a thousand in the wild and they’re native to Sumatra. They only bloom every 7-10 years.
“It smells like rotting flesh and that's why it has the name corpse flower. It does that on purpose because that’s how it attracts it's main pollinators which are flies and carrion beetles," said Michelle Baudanza of the Norfolk Botanical Garden.
Garden officials took to social media to vote on the smelly flower's name. And one of the conservatory staff ended up being the winner with the name Lady Macdeath.
The garden is open 7 days a week until 7pm with extended hours til 10pm when this fine Lady unfurls her smelly bloom which only lasts for 24 - 48 hours. So stay tuned to the garden’s website for the unique and odoriferous affair.
