VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Locals and visitors alike have enjoyed coming to the Virginia Beach Fishing Pier for decades. Now, the Oceanfront staple is celebrating 75 years of fun, fishing and entertainment.
Norfolk resident Veronica Machicotte said she and her sister, Selena, come to the pier every chance they get.
“I like the pier. I like that you can be out on the water,” said Machicotte. “I like that you can see the water through the cracks in the floor."
Machicotte continued, “We’re probably going to go under the pier and see what we can find—maybe some shells. We saw a guy catch a stingray. The guy at the end caught a stingray. He threw it back in the water. That was pretty cool."
The pier at 15th Street first opened in the summer of 1950, serving as the centerpiece of beach fun at the resort strip. It houses the long-standing restaurant Ocean Eddie’s, a gift shop and a bait shop.
The cost to fish or crab is $12 for adults and $6 for kids. But if you want to just go for a stroll on the pier, that’ll cost you $3.
There is a big party to celebrate the pier's 75th birthday on Saturday, June 7, with live music, food and drinks. The party gets started at 10 a.m. and goes until 6 p.m. at the pier on 15th Street.
The Virginia Beach Fishing Pier has been the center of family fun for 75 years, making it positively Hampton Roads.
