NORFOLK, Va. — Two people have died in connection to a barricade situation in Norfolk on Thursday, Norfolk police said Friday.

Around 9:30 a.m., while working on a missing person investigation, Norfolk police arrived to a home in the 3900 Block of Peterson Street. Police say they were searching for a 33-year-old woman who was reported missing on April 30.

Upon arrival, police tried to talk to a man that was involved. He barricaded himself inside the residence as a result, according to police. This led to the Hostage/Crisis Negotiation Team and Special Operations Team to respond to the scene.

After a period of negotiation, the man was found inside the home suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police.

The 38-year-old man was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. He later died at the hospital, according to police.

Police say a 33-year-old woman was also found with a life-threatening gunshot wound, she died at the scene.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will work to determine the official manner and cause of death.
