CHESAPEAKE, Va. — In a heartwarming surprise, Dawna Stowers, president of Chesapeake’s Deep Creek Athletic Association, has been honored as this week's News 3 Everyday Hero. Known for her commitment to local youth sports, Stowers has inspired countless children and fellow volunteers alike.

“She's amazing. She's here always for the kids,” said Chelsea Shelton, who has volunteered alongside Dawna for years. When asked why she devotes so much time to the community, Shelton offered this insight: “It's just who she is. She loves giving back to her community. She'll always say, 'hashtag love where you live.' That's her thing.”

For nine years, Stowers has been a constant presence, waking up before dawn to tend to fields and coordinating activities over countless nights and weekends. “I am absolutely dedicated to the love of the game, and I love providing an opportunity for the youth here in Deep Creek to show their talent and instill that love in the next generation,” Stowers said.

The admiration isn’t one-sided. The kids who have participated in programs under her leadership speak highly of her dedication. One child shared, “Very good influence on all the kids around, and she doesn't play with mean parents.” Another added, “I care about her very much, and I'm thankful for all the stuff she does for me.”

Stowers feels a strong connection to the children in her community. “It makes me feel like I'm doing my job and making sure that they feel like this is a home for them,” she said when asked about her relationship with the kids.

To mark her recognition, we surprised her with this week's News 3 Everyday Hero award. The honor includes a $300 Visa gift card from our community partner Southern Bank.

Stowers responded, “Honestly, can't describe it. I’m just grateful to be recognized, but more importantly, I hope I get to continue doing it for a really long time.”
