EDENTON, N.C. — You probably won't find a cleaner gym than the one inside the Chowan Senior Center in Edenton.

That's saying a lot, considering how many people use it every day.

“We serve probably 165 people every day throughout the day with congregant meals, fitness classes and the gym," said Sandra Taylor, the center's Program Director and only full-time employee.

Lena Taylor is one of those local seniors who uses the space, but she doesn't only workout.

"I clean up the machines, take care of the tables and floors sometimes," she tells News 3 in a quiet tone.

It's a major understatement, according to those who watch her work.

"I depend on volunteers to help me out, run this center, and Lena is a big help," said Sandra. "I can depend on Lena."

“She comes here every day at ten o’clock and she stays until four. I can be over there on the computer and I leave at two and she’s still here," said Susan Brothers, Lena's sister.

Brothers reached out to News 3 and submitted her name for an Everyday Hero award, explaining her work.

When we arrived to surprise her with the award, Lena was surrounded by at least two dozen others willing to share how she helps around town, including taking fellow seniors to doctor appointments.

“She’s a great person and she’s been a great help to me since she returned back home," said Lena's other sister Mary White.

As it turns out, Lena moved away from her hometown of Edenton and lived in Connecticut for 50 years. She only returned a few years back, but drew attention for efforts to help others and make the community a better place.

Lena was still surprised, though, to receive an Everyday Hero award. If you ask her, the senior center in particular does just as much for her as she does for it.

"I like coming here. It's my lifeline," said Lena. "I’m a retired person and I’ve been away for 50 years. I can spend all day here.”

It's a place where she's found find health and community. But, make no mistake, Lena is a true giver: One who gives without expecting anything in return.
