OUTER BANKS, N.C. — A portion of N.C. 12 was closed due to deteriorating conditions on Ocracoke Island, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) said Monday.

On Tuesday, NCDOT said ferry services have resumed and N.C. 12 on the north end has reopened. However, they still advised drivers to take "extreme caution" on the road due to sand and water in the area.

Coastal flooding in Buxton

Monday afternoon tidal flooding was expected thanks to a coastal low moving onshore.

For Tuesday, Meteorologist Myles Henderson says heavy downpours and isolated storms are possible, bringing localized flooding and even a stray tornado.

Winds will continue to gust to 30+ mph. The persistent NE wind will trigger flooding near times of high tide. The biggest tidal flooding threat will be near high tide this evening around 6 p.m.
