OUTER BANKS, N.C. — A portion of N.C. 12 has been closed due to deteriorating conditions on Ocracoke Island Monday afternoon, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT).

N.C. 12 is closed from the ferry terminal to the National Park Service Pony Pens due to worsening conditions at the north end of Ocracoke Island, NCDOT says.

NCDOT says it will reevaluate and see if conditions get better Tuesday morning at dawn.

Coastal flooding in Buxton

Monday afternoon tidal flooding is expected thanks to a coastal low that is moving onshore.

High tide will be around 5 pm to 7 pm. Showers and breezy conditions will pick up tonight, thunderstorms are possible as well and isolated tornadoes could spin up late tonight into early Tuesday morning.

Overnight lows will stay in the 60s, with winds out of the NE at 15-25 mph with gusts to 40 mph.
