HAMPTON, Va. — As students across Hampton Roads prepare to head back to school Monday, dozens of families took advantage of a special community event designed to help children look and feel their best for the new academic year.

The Hampton Roads Professional Beauty and Barber Technicians partnered with Southeastern Virginia Health System for their 22nd annual "Looking Cool for School" event Sunday at Above All Hair Studio in Hampton. The free event provided haircuts, hairstyles, shoes, and school supplies to local families.

"My desire is to make sure it gives them a positive and a more confidence and build their confidence level so they can go to school and deal with today's society," said LaTonya Taliferro, President of the Hampton Roads Professional Beauty and Barber Technicians.

“My mother, she had to pay for me to get my hair done or whatever, and now you got individuals that are actually doing it for free, giving back to the community. It’s a great thing," Tawana Pona, a parent who brought her two daughters said.

The event addresses a real need in the community, especially as families struggle with rising costs of living.

"Some parents are trying to figure out how they're gonna eat. So instead, I wanna take that burden off of them and allow them to at least let us do something that we can give it back to the community that's free," Taliferro explained.

Licensed beauticians and barbers provided free select hairstyles and haircuts by appointment, along with complimentary shampoos and styling services. The event also featured free shoe giveaways, school supplies, and hourly giveaways throughout the day. For many children, the event represents their first experience in a professional salon or barber shop setting.

"Some kids never get to go to the salon because their parents can't afford it. This is their time to have their spa day," Taliferro said. "We're teaching the boys how to groom. We're teaching the young ladies how it's important to get your hair shampooed and get it done, to grooming perfect grooming."

The partnership with Southeastern Virginia Health System (SEVHS) reflects both organizations' commitment to supporting local families. The health system provides adult and pediatric care, accepts most insurances, welcomes uninsured patients, and offers various assistance programs including a sliding fee discount program for qualifying families.

The event's impact goes beyond just providing free services — it's about building self-esteem and confidence as students prepare for a new school year.

“The new hairstyle can help boost esteem, sending the kids back feeling good, looking good, and ready for that new school year," LaRonda Pirtle, Vice President Hampton Roads Professional Beauty and Barber Technicians said.

As families continue to navigate economic challenges, events like "Looking Cool for School" demonstrate the power of community partnerships in supporting local children and families. The 22-year tradition shows no signs of slowing down, with organizers already looking forward to next year's event.
