NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk Fire-Rescue crews knocked down a Sunday morning fire at Old Dominion University’s Welcome Center after smoke and flames were spotted coming from the building.

Firefighters were called to the center at Hampton Boulevard and 49th Street around 8:24 a.m. The first crew arrived minutes later and saw smoke coming from the building. They were also told the fire appeared to be coming from an electrical room.

Crews pulled a hose line through the front door to reach the flames while another team searched the building to ensure no one was inside. Firefighters on the roof reported flames venting near a skylight, and several hose lines were used to get to the main fire.

The blaze was brought under control at 9:37 a.m. No one was inside the building at the time, and no injuries were reported.

Old Dominion University later clarified the fire occurred at its Welcome Center and said the fire was quickly extinguished. The university added that no one was inside at the time and the cause remains under investigation, though it does not appear suspicious.

Norfolk Fire-Rescue is continuing to investigate what sparked the fire.
