SUFFOLK, Va. — A Suffolk veteran marked a milestone Saturday with a celebration at Poplar Run Baptist Church.
Lifelong Suffolk resident Tommie Lawrence Sr. turned 106 years old. Family, friends and community members gathered to honor his life and service.
Lawrence Sr. is a WWII veteran, having served for six years in the Army. He went onto work for the Navy Department for nearly 40 years.
At 106, Lawrence Sr. is proving age is just a number: He's a dedicated member of Poplar Run Baptist Church, and his hobbies include reading, playing checkers and storytelling. On top of that, he exercises every day!
The event drew a large crowd of well-wishers who joined together to celebrate the centenarian’s birthday.
