VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Teddy Riley created some of his greatest work in Virginia Beach, and now the musical legend is returning to the area — not just to make music, but to give back.
Riley has written a book titled "Remember the Times," which encompasses his musical journey, including time spent with Michael Jackson.
"It means legacy, it means history," Riley said.
Riley said the book's title reflects his roots.
"It's more about me and where I came from — New York and Virginia," Riley said.
When asked whether he claims New York or Virginia, Riley didn't choose sides.
"I always say I'm NY-VA," Riley said.
Riley said he's inspired by the musical talent that has come out of the region.
"Loving the scene, and seeing the people who came after me like Pharrell and most of the artists from here," Riley said.
Now, Riley has bigger plans for the area — a performing arts academy in the 757.
"It's more of building a community. A new community of our next creators," Riley said.
Riley said his vision for returning to Virginia goes beyond music.
"If I come back there I want to build more creators, and people who really want it. Not just in music, but just in life and culture," Riley said.
The academy will operate differently from a traditional school — it won't have students, only members.
"This will be a place where you have a membership to come and understand and live the lifestyle," Riley said.
Riley said he's already moving on the project.
"We're already looking at buildings," Riley said.
He set an ambitious timeline for the academy's opening.
"We're moving forward, I'm trying to cut a ribbon next year," Riley said.
I will continue following Riley's academy progress and what else he plans to bring back to the place he called home for so many years.
