CHESAPEAKE — The 28th annual Mayflower Marathon food drive is November 22-24, and the Hells Angels motorcycle club is playing a big part of that.

Tony Caruana, President of Hells Angels Beach Side Chapter, said while the presentation of hundreds of bikes at the finale of the Mayflower Marathon is exciting, it takes weeks of work beforehand. They spend weekends starting at the end of October collecting at various Kroger grocery stores. They’ve been doing this for more than a decade, he says.

“Each year from then to now has been getting better and better,” said Caruana. “Every year we break records over the previous year. We’ve never had a decline which is an amazing thing.”

It couldn’t be done without the generosity of the community who give both food and monetary donations.

Hells Angels will continue collecting the weekend of November 23/24. Caruana says they’ll be at Krogers at the following locations: Sentinel Drive in Chesapeake, Virginia Beach Boulevard, Holland Road, Laskin Road, Providence Road, and Suffolk.

Some suggested items are: peanut butter, canned tuna and chicken, beans, canned fruits and vegetables, boxed meals, soups, cereal, rice, baby food, formula, diapers, and baby wipes. They ask for no glass containers.
