NORFOLK, Va. — Police have identified the man shot and killed by Norfolk officers Friday afternoon as 31-year-old Dwayne D. Harris of Norfolk.
Norfolk Police Chief Mark Talbot said officers were dispatched around 12:10 p.m. to a home in the 1700 block of Cornell Avenue for a reported residential burglary. When they arrived, they found Harris, who the chief said had just broken into a home and was armed with a gun.

Harris got into a car and drove away, prompting a short pursuit that ended at the intersection of Guam Parkway and Meadowcreek Road. Talbot said Harris got out of the vehicle with a gun in his hand and pointed it at officers, who fired several shots in defense.
Harris was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured.
The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation is handling the investigation. All officers involved have been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome.
