NORFOLK, Va. — A person driving a stolen vehicle crashed on the Berkley Bridge headed toward Norfolk early Monday before they got out of the car, jumped into the Elizabeth River, and died, Portsmouth Police say.

The individual, who was not identified, was located in the water by authorities later. They were working to recover the body from the river before noon, police said.

Delays followed the chase on I-264 Monday morning before 7 a.m., the Virginia Department of Transportation reported.

Video from WTKR and VDOT showed crews responding to the incident on I-264 near Waterside Drive on the Norfolk side of the bridge shortly after the incident.
