NORFOLK, Va. — Airfare for the upcoming holiday season is already climbing, and travel experts are urging travelers to book sooner rather than later.
According to The Points Guy, holiday airfare is between 13 and 18% more expensive compared to last year — and could spike to 30% more for those who wait. The latest government inflation data shows airfares are up 25% more this year than last year.
Higher fuel costs and strong travel demand are driving the price increases, experts say.
Julian Kheel, founder and CEO of Points Path, said travelers should lock in fares now — but keep watching for better deals.
"Most airfares today, aside from basic economy, can be canceled or changed without a penalty," Kheel said. "So go ahead, find a fare that works for you. Lock it in, but keep looking. Use some of those technology tools available. If you find a lower price, cancel your other flight, lock in the new price."
