SUFFOLK, Va. — Suffolk Public Schools students returned to class Monday for the first day of the new school year, with Kings Fork Middle School students among those heading back to their classrooms.
At Kings Fork Middle, the excitement of the first day was still sinking in for some students.
"The work probably," said Nylah, an 8th grader, when asked what she was least looking forward to.
Davey, a 7th grader at Kings Fork Middle, said he was most excited about orchestra — though he was a little less enthusiastic about at least one subject.
"I'm honestly not that sure but probably like math or something like that," Davey said, when asked what he was least looking forward to.
One change students and families will notice right away is new cameras on Suffolk school buses. The technology will allow administrators to monitor buses in real time, as the district works to make transportation safer and more efficient.
One parent, Stephen, said his 8th grader is heading into the school year with some clear goals.
"He has a goal of a b average right we're shooting low but he has a goal of a b average. He's excited about playing football so we'll balance his health his education and sports," Stephen said.
For students who find the first day of school tough, Davey offered some straightforward advice.
"Just try to be yourself and if anyone gets you down then just ignore them and try to keep on pushing through," Davey said.
