VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — There was a heavy police presence on Thursday night around 9:30 p.m. at the Columbus Street and Kellam Road intersection, near the Wegman's on Virginia Beach Boulevard.
Virginia Beach police say they responded to the 4800 block of Columbus Street after receiving a report of a gunshot wound.
Police are investigating the case, but said it is an isolated incident and there is no threat to public safety.
The response marks the second shooting police have handled this week around Town Center.
The first incident occurred early Sunday morning in a nearby parking lot, where three people were shot.
“It’s a shame, and it’s tragic in a nice place like this you got this kind of crime,” said Diana Watson, who lives near Town Center.
According to a criminal complaint, the shooting followed a dispute in the parking lot between Taco Bell and Keagan's Irish Pub.
The complaint states the suspect left Keagan’s with a cousin. When a dispute began in the parking lot, surveillance footage allegedly showed Davon Wright firing a gun before getting into a white sedan and driving away.
“When I was younger it seemed to be a lot safer,” Watson said. “We would run around at the Oceanfront until 2 a.m., but times have changed, unfortunately.”
Wright has been charged with three counts of malicious wounding and firing a gun in public causing injury.
Despite the incidents, Watson said she still feels safe visiting Town Center, often considered the city’s downtown area.
“I mean it’s got everything here,” she said. “I’m not going to stop coming, but like I said, I’m not going to be here late at night.”
