SUFFOLK, Va. — All north lanes on the MMMBT are closed after a crash involving two tractor-trailers, during which one caught fire, state police shared Thursday afternoon.

As of 3:15 p.m., all north lanes remain closed and traffic backups are about 2.5 miles long. Crews are still at the scene, but there no longer appears to be heavy smoke coming from the vehicle.

The crash happened around 11:15 a.m. in the northbound lanes. Police say a tractor-trailer slowed down due to congested traffic when another tractor-trailer, loaded with lumber, couldn't stop in time. The loaded tractor-trailer caught fire after crashing into the other one.

Neither of the drivers are hurt, police say. The driver of the loaded tractor-trailer that couldn't stop in time is charged with following too closely, police added.

The crash remains under investigation.
