Kristy Steward

Meteorologist

Kristy Steward is News 3’s weekend evening meteorologist. You can also catch her at 10 p.m., on WGNT Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. She joined the First Warning Storm team in May 2021.

Prior to moving to Hampton Roads, Kristy was the morning and noon meteorologist at WNKY in Bowling Green, KY. Throughout her time in south-central Kentucky, she covered all kinds of weather from flooding to droughts to tornadoes and even tropical remnants. With an active 2020 hurricane season, Kristy fell in love with forecasting hurricanes and had an itch to move closer to the beach and closer to that tropical action. Also in 2020, Kristy was runner-up for Best Weathercast in the state of Kentucky by the Kentucky Broadcasters Association. She was part of the award-winning team that won Best Morning Newscast in Kentucky in 2019 and was runner-up in 2020. While maintaining her main meteorologist duties at WNKY, she did a stint of anchoring, co-hosting, and being the meteorologist for their sister station WGTA in Atlanta, GA. She also started a weekly weather podcast with the evening meteorologist.

Kristy’s alma mater is Penn State University where she graduated with her Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology and Atmospheric Science in 2018 (We Are!). Throughout her time in college, she started broadcasting as a freshman, participating in all six student-run show opportunities. She also went on three cross-country storm chasing trips, which is ironic because she was terrified of tornadoes growing up. On those chase trips, she did see a few tornadoes, one of which was a close call. She had two internships, one at WRAL in Raleigh, NC and another at KTTC in Rochester, MN.

Born and raised in Cary, NC, Kristy is very happy to be back close to home and in a place with mild winters!

When she isn’t forecasting the weather, she enjoys exploring all southeast Virginia and northeast North Carolina have to offer with her dog and two cats.

If you have any tips on places she should visit or have a cool weather picture to share, you can connect with Kristy on social media @kristystewardwx or email her at kristy.steward@wtkr.com
