ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — A welcoming party was in full force at Northeastern High School Monday morning, made up of Elizabeth City State University football players, cheerleaders, faculty and staff. Applause and compliments rang out as each student walked through the doors from the drop-off line on their first day.
"Feels good. It's like you get to see that they really took time out of their day to come spend time with freshmen, sophomores, basically just all the high school students in general," said Tony Johnson, a sophomore at the high school.
Johnson excited to be back inside the school for a new year. "I hope this school year just becomes like the best school year ever," said Johnson.
Community partners were all across Elizabeth City Pasquotank Public Schools on Monday.
"Here at Northeastern, we've been joined by Elizabeth City State University and members of the football team, the cheerleading squad, the faculty and staff are here to support our students to welcome them back," said superintendent Keith Parker.
Parker also on campus at Northeastern High School Monday morning while making his rounds around the city and county to welcome the students in.
"Energy is so strong, and I think that's just an example of how exciting of a school year we have ahead," said Parker.
That continued energy over the past few years has led to major academic achievements in the classroom for ECPPS as a whole.
"I really believe because of the dedication of our school leaders and our incredible teachers that year after year we continue to see gains in student achievement. And that's important because we believe that the future for our young people is bright, and the successes they have today are going to prepare them for the futures of tomorrow," said Parker,
Parker teasing to another major announcement next week about more achievements in the classrooms around ECCPS.
"We aren't allowed to announce those scores today, but next week we're going to be able to publicly share what is going to be some incredible gains that our young people have demonstrated," said Parker.
A special day across Elizabeth City and Pasquotank County starting off another school year.
