VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A Virginia Beach police officer shot a man at a storage unit facility on Honeygrove Road Wednesday morning near Old Donation School, according to a department spokesperson on the scene.

Around 8:45 a.m., police say they responded to a report of a person pointing a firearm at someone else at AAAA Self Storage in the 4600 block of Honeygrove Road, near Ferry Plantation Road.

When police arrived, they found a man with a handgun. One of the officers shot the armed man, a VBPD spokesperson at the scene told WTKR News 3. The man was taken to the hospital and as of this writing, police do not know his current condition.

The suspect did not fire shots, police say.

The spokesperson could not say if the suspect pointed his gun at the officer, sharing, "The individual had the firearm in his hands, and they engaged the individual. One of our officers discharged his firearm, striking the individual, and the individual has been transported for his injuries."

Police also could not share who the man was reportedly pointing the gun at before officers arrived or if any storage units at the facility were damaged, as the investigation is ongoing.

News 3 reporter John Hood was at the scene following the shooting, where he learned a daycare may have been the first ones to call 911.

Kyrah Ikpe with Honeygrove Learning Academy tells News 3 she believes the man in the incident was the same person who tried entering her business after 7 a.m.

"It's been a horrible day," said Ikpe. "We had kids here. We had to go on lockdown. We were locked in the back because that's where our shelter in place is. So we were locked in the back most of the morning... it's been a crazy morning."

We reached out to police to see if the man tried entering the childcare center this morning, but they couldn't confirm it.

Police said there is no ongoing threat at this time.

Old Donation School, located nearby, was briefly on an external lockdown as a precaution during police's investigation, Virginia Beach City Public Schools says. The lockdown has since been lifted and the school is under normal operations again.
