PORTSMOUTH, Va. — A girl was taken to a hospital after being shot early Monday morning, Portsmouth police said.

Officers responded to the 100 block of Mt. Vernon Avenue at around 3:55 a.m. and found a girl who had been shot. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

A suspect, 26-year-old Traveion Carpenter, was arrested and charged with aggravated malicious wounding, shooting, etc. in committing or attempting a felony; and use or display of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Portsmouth police are continuing to investigate the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call the Portsmouth Police Investigations Bureau at 757-393-8536.
